Before every ride

A simple pre-ride safety check

A short routine before rolling out. It mirrors the common "ABC" approach often referenced by cycling organisations: Air, Brakes, Chain.

  • AAir. Press both tires. They should feel firm. Confirm against the pressure range printed on the sidewall.
  • BBrakes. Squeeze each lever. The wheel should stop before the lever reaches the bar, with pads meeting the rim or rotor cleanly.
  • CChain & cranks. Spin the pedals backward. The chain should run smoothly and look lightly lubricated, not dry or gritty.
  • QQuick-releases & bolts. Check that wheel skewers or thru-axles are closed and that the stem and seatpost are tight.
  • LLights & bell. Many Canadian provinces require a front light, rear reflector or light, and a bell for riding after dark. Confirm your local rules.
